5 key games that will impact the race for the 1-seed in the AFC

(Imagn)

The Denver Broncos currently are in first place in the AFC, which is a scary thing for the rest of the conference.

While so many of the talking heads continue to dismiss the Broncos and try to poke holes in this team’s status as a contender, the truth is that nobody wants to come through Mile High in January.

It’s always a tough place to win regardless, but when that building truly gets rocking for a big game, even the most legendary of quarterbacks struggle in Denver. Just ask Tom Brady how he feels about all those times he had to come here.

The Colts are going to have to drop a game, preferably a few. But the 1-seed is certainly within reach for the Broncos if they can close the regular season strong. With that in mind, here are five key games that are going to have a massive impact on the race for the spot in the AFC.

Indianapolis Colts @ Kansas City Chiefs (Nov. 23)

  • Indi has the head-to-head tiebreaker at the moment. If the Colts lose to KC, it helps the Broncos in the push for the 1-seed. However, if they win, it puts the Chiefs in a spot where they’d likely have to win out to make the playoffs. It’s a win-win scenario.

Buffalo Bills @ New England Patriots (Dec. 14)

  • New England has the easiest remaining schedule of the top 3 teams at the moment. The most difficult game left on their schedule is probably going to be against Josh Allen and the Bills.

Indianapolis Colts @ Seattle Seahawks (Dec. 14)

  • Seattle is one of the tougher places to play. That’s not a fun road trip late in the season for a team that’s trying to secure a top seed.

Green Bay Packers @ Denver Broncos (Dec. 14)

  • Denver can’t overlook any of the remaining opponents but most of the remaining road trips are manageable. The best team that still has to come through Denver next month is the Packers.

Denver Broncos @ Kansas City Chiefs (Dec. 25)

  • Going to Arrowhead is always a bit of a nightmare. A season sweep of the Chiefs would be a massive statement though.
