👋 Good Morning!

I don’t know about you but I’ve really enjoyed the Stanley Cup Final. Every game has been electric and the intensity has been next level. There have been a bunch of goals and about as many fights. If you’re not traditionally a hockey fan this could be the series that changes your tune.

I know the wound is still fresh for Avs fans, so I get if some of you are still too scorned to lock into the matchup. But from an entertainment standpoint it’s been must-see TV.

Who are you rooting for?

Cale Makar takes home the Norris Trophy

(Imagn)

Cale Makar took home the James Norris Memorial Trophy this week for the second time in his already-impressive career. The prestigious honor is awarded to the NHL’s best all-around defenseman.

Makar was not quite a unanimous selection. He did however receive 176 of 191 first-place votes, so it was pretty much a runaway. And it should have been, considering Makar led NHL defenseman in goals, assists and points in 2024-25.

I am of the belief that Makar is the most versatile hockey player in the world. He’s an offensive wizard and everyone knows that. He honestly doesn’t get enough credit for the impact he makes defensively though. Makar is the definition of a two-way star.

In honor of Father’s Day this weekend, my dad and I were in the building for Makar’s NHL debut back in April of 2019. That 6-2 playoff win over the Flames had Ball Arena bumping and it’s still one of my favorite sporting events that we’ve ever attended together. Prior to the Stars series this year, it was the only NHL playoff game I had ever been to.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in the DNVR universe. I hope you enjoy the burgers and hot dogs that you’ll probably end up having to make for everyone this weekend. Don’t forget to check your propane levels, make sure you have enough charcoal, etc.

Mya Lesnar became the first thrower in Colorado State history to win both an indoor and outdoor national championship in shot put last night. Lesnar threw the 8.8-pound ball 62-4.5 feet on her first attempt and nobody was able to top her from there. She won the indoor title back in 2024 and is one of two athletes, male or female, to win multiple national championships at CSU.

The Rockies used a ninth-inning rally to beat the Giants on Thursday afternoon and avoid being swept. Trailing 7-6 with the bases loaded, and with a 3-2 count, Orlando Arcia delivered with a two-run single to take down San Francisco for the 8-7 win.
