👋 Good Morning!

I think we all woke up in 2005. Atop the AFC standings are Indianapolis (8-2), Denver (8-2) and New England (8-2).

All that’s missing now is everyone walking around with iPods. Anybody knows what time American Idol is on? Or should we play Halo 2 on the Xbox instead?

Can Paul DePodesta revive the Rockies?

(Imagn)

The Colorado Rockies have handed the keys to Jonah Hill’s character in Moneyball. If you missed the news last week, the organization hired Paul DePodesta to be the team’s head of baseball operations.

DePodesta most recently spent the last 10 years working for the Cleveland Browns as the team’s chief strategy officer. However, he spent two-plus decades in baseball before that. Most notably he was Billy Beene’s right-hand man in Oakland from 1999-2003 before becoming the general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004. He’s also worked in Cleveland, San Diego and New York (Mets) in various front office capacities.

Reactions seem mixed based on what I’ve seen. Some applaud the Rockies for finally hiring somebody to run the team from outside the organization. Others feel it’s a classic Rockies move to hire someone who hasn’t been relevant in baseball for a decade-plus.

It’ll be interesting to see who DePodesta brings in as a general manager. But I like the idea of hiring someone who infamously leaned into sabermetrics and was not afraid to think outside the box during a time it controversial. And more importantly, I like that he’s had success against the big boys with a small market franchise.

Who knows how it will work out in the end. At least the Rockies finally tried something different though.

The Colorado Avalanche out-scored the opposition 14-5 over two wins this past weekend. Nathan MacKinnon had nine points in the process. It was a nice little trip north of the border for the Avs, even if last night’s overtime win got a little hairy.

The CU Football staff still struggles to manage timeouts but they do appear to have a terrific young quarterback.

Denver has real depth in the frontcourt behind Nikola Jokić for the first time in years. It was on display in a major way on Saturday night.
