Colorado State is taking a swing with its next head football coach. According to multiple national reports, CSU is expected to hire Jim Mora. The announcement isn’t official in Fort Collins as of this morning, however, UCONN has already publicly stated Mora’s departure from the program. So I imagine we’ll be getting word from the CSU brass within the day.

Mora is a longtime coach with experience in both the NFL and collegiate ranks. Most recently he’s coming off of back-to-back nine-win seasons at UCONN, which is impressive considering the program’s history and independent status. It’s not a place that’s traditionally seen much success on the gridiron.

He’s 73-53 as a college coach, with six seasons of eight or more wins between his stints at UCLA and UCONN. One of his biggest tasks now with CSU, though, will be to find and develop a quarterback.

UCONN had a top 20 offense in the FBS this season at 36.9 points per game. But it’s been a long time since we’ve seen above-average QB play from anybody at CSU.

Ultimately it feels like a solid hire for a CSU program that’s struggled to compete with any type of consistency since the opening of Canvas Stadium. If Mora turns this thing around, he’ll be absolutely revered by Ram fans.
