It’s been a weird 48 hours but the Denver Broncos are hosting the AFC Championship on Sunday.

Saturday night was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced as a sports fan. Broncos Country went from pure joy to complete disbelief in less than an hour. It was like having a winning lottery ticket in our hands but getting mugged on the way to cash it in. Finding out that Bo Nix fractured his ankle was genuinely devastating.

While it’s obviously brutal to lose Nix, if there’s a silver lining in all of this it’s that the second-year quarterback has proven he’s the guy. He out-dueled Josh Allen in a playoff game and once again showed that he’s built for the big moment. The go-ahead touchdown to Marvin Mims was the kind of play that the greats make. Nix has the right stuff and he proved it in the biggest game of his career.

As far as the AFC Championship Game goes, Jarrett Stidham can play. He’s a backup for a reason but he’s capable of slinging it enough to give the Broncos a shot. Preseason is preseason, I get it, but he really did make some big-time throws this past August. He’s about as competent of a No. 2 as you could hope for.

This is why you play for home field advantage. Nobody is coming through Mile High in January and just breezing on through.

Not much went well for the Nuggets last night in a 110-87 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. That was more like what I envisioned in my mind when Nikola Jokić got injured. I’m glad it’s actually the outlier performance at the moment.
