👋 Good Morning!

The NBA Draft is tonight and on a personal note, I couldn’t be happier for Nique Clifford. He’s a Colorado kid who worked his butt off and did all the right things to put himself in position to be a first-round pick.

It’s really unfortunate the Nuggets have no draft capital because they could use somebody like Clifford in the rotation. An athletic guard with defensive versatility and the ability to both stretch the floor and get to the rim, he’d thrive playing around Nikola Jokić.

Regardless of where he ends up, Clifford will always have a fan in me. He was always incredibly gracious and thoughtful in interviews. And he’s one of the hardest working people I’ve ever seen behind the scenes.

The Nuggets continue to avoid the second apron like the plague

In a press conference to introduce his newest front office staff on Tuesday, Josh Kroenke ensured his words would be the only thing that anybody remembers.

“For us as an organization, going into that second apron is not necessarily something that we’re scared of,” Kroenke said.

“I think there are rules around it that we needed to be very careful of with our injury history. The wrong person gets injured and very quickly you’re into a scenario where — that I never want to have to contemplate — and that’s trading No. 15. So we’re very conscious of that pushing forward.”

Bringing up a potential scenario where the Nuggets could have to trade Nikola Jokić was one of two things:

  1. A legitimate instance of too much honesty. Maybe he genuinely doesn’t think Jokić will want to sign another long-term deal with the Nuggets. If that’s the case, though, saying this after having two months to prepare your message is not exactly confidence inspiring.

  2. A manipulation tactic to make a Jokić trade synonymous with the second apron. When they continue to let quality players go to avoid it, as they’ve already done with guys like Bruce Brown and KCP in the past, the organization’s justification will be it’s because they won’t have to trade its star down the line. But the truth is it’s just cost-cutting to maximize profits rather than going all in to win.

The Kroenkes have a net worth of $18 billion according to Forbes. Operating like the Rockies might be business savvy but it goes against the spirit of what owning a team should be like. You owe it to Jokić and to the fans to push all your chips in the middle of the table.
